Subject:

Darrell Burns Presents Movin Uptown - the Story of One Man's Migration from Access to SQL Server

Abstract:

Mark your calendar, invite your Access developer friends and join us Thursday May 20 at 6:00 PM for the next SDSQLUG meeting.
As always we will have pizza and networking starting at 6:00 followed by our presentation at 6:30.

SDSQLUG member Darrell Burns, President of Frontline Data Architects, will be presenting:

"Movin Uptown - the Story of One Man's Migration from Access to SQL Server".

In the first part of the presentation Darrell will describe his data-driven approach to developing a sophisticated application for import classification.

In the second part he will explain why he was prompted to convert the database to SQL Server 2008, his experiences in migrating the data and procedures, and the positive outcome that made a SQL Server convert out of Darrell.

You'll be seeing a demonstration of both the before and after versions of the app with performance comparisons, before and after code samples, examples of the key differences between Access/VBA and SQL Server development, and how swapping out the back-end to SQL Server can preserve your investment in an existing Access app by extending its scalability, flexibility, and performance.

The points of interest that Darrell's presentation will focus on are: Using metadata to translate user language into government language Using metadata to dynamically control the user interface Access-to-SQL migration steps Using stored procedures to leverage the power of SQL Server without changing your Access GUI SQL Server performance advantages over pure Access Syntactical differences between Access SQL and T-SQL This topic should be of particular interest to:
